Impacts of the overgrazing include the spread of the non-native species such as annual meadow grass Poa annua, increased soil erosion, and the increased likelihood of the nests of burrowing prions and petrels, e.g. the white-chinned petrels, collapsing. In 2013 and 2014, over 6,500 reindeer were shot as part of a reindeer eradication programme funded by the Government of SGSSI. As a result, there are now no reindeer on South Georgia, allowing regeneration of the habitats that suffered from overgrazing. |
